Chesapeake Bay Fisheries Monitoring Specialist

ECO Magazine is seeking two part-time Fisheries Monitoring Specialists to oversee and confirm daily charter boat harvests occurring on the Chesapeake Bay. This verification process supports an electronic harvest reporting initiative for Maryland's Chesapeake Bay fisheries. Monitors will be tasked with engaging charter boat captains at the dock to confirm the species and quantities harvested during the unloading process.
Position Overview: Monitors are expected to operate independently from home, conducting spot checks at charter boat landing sites throughout the charter season. Participation in training sessions to learn harvest documentation procedures is mandatory. Monitors will receive tablet devices equipped with software for scheduling spot checks and documenting monitored harvests.
Work Schedule: Harvest activities take place seven days a week. Monitors will be assigned four-hour shifts for three to four days each week, totaling 12 shifts monthly.
Compensation Details: Monitors will receive compensation for four-hour shifts at a rate of $15 per hour. Mileage will be reimbursed according to Maryland's State mileage reimbursement policy.
Location of Work: Monitors will be hired in close proximity to various charter boat landing locations.
Qualifications:- Dependable transportation for monitoring duties.
- Strong communication and interviewing skills, with the ability to manage challenging interpersonal situations while maintaining professionalism.
- Adherence to Covid-19 safety protocols.
- Capacity to work autonomously to intercept daily fishery offload locations.
- Understanding of Maryland Chesapeake Bay fisheries, target species, and relevant terminology. This includes the ability to quickly identify Chesapeake Bay fish species during spot checks (training will be provided).
- Proficient in using tablet computers, data collection applications, and measuring scales, or the willingness to learn.
- Ability to maintain a consistent weekly schedule and coordinate with the project supervisor.
- Willingness to travel to other Chesapeake Bay regions if necessary.
- Physical capability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Reliable transportation for traveling to harvest offload locations.
- Ability to learn and adhere to harvest reporting guidelines and data collection procedures.
Fisheries monitoring serves as an independent verification process for charter boat harvests, and qualified monitors should not have affiliations with Maryland's commercial fishing sector.
