Job Summary

This is a Substitute Bus Aide position within the Alabama Department of Education. The successful candidate will provide support services for maximum student comfort and safety while assisting the special education bus driver.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Assist the Special Education Bus Driver: Help students board and exit school buses, maintain order and comfort on school buses, and keep routine records related to student transportation or behavior.
  2. Transfer Students: Safely transfer students on and off buses, and assist with movement of students with special needs as required.
  3. Support Field Trips: Assist teachers and bus drivers on field trips by helping students with physical needs, maintaining discipline, and reinforcing learning situations.
  4. Maintain Confidentiality: Maintain confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters and perform duties in a courteous and professional manner.
  5. Identify and Report Problems: Identify potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility and report to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
Requirements
  1. Meet Suitability Criteria: Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No.
  2. Relevant Work Experience: Demonstrated success in relevant work experience, including ability to work in a highly demanding, stressful environment.
  3. Communication Skills: Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication with students, parents, and others.
  4. Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  5. Physical Abilities: Physical strength, agility, dexterity, acuity, and mobility to perform job responsibilities, including lifting up to 50 pounds.
  6. Technology Skills: Ability to use technology to communicate, manage data, and produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
  7. Flexibility: Ability to work flexible hours as needed to provide adult assistance on special education buses.
  8. Punctuality and Attendance: Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
