Facility Maintenance Worker
40 Hours/Week - 12 Months/Year
Definition

Under supervision, responsible for maintaining an assigned facility area in a clean, sanitary, safe, and organized manner; securing rooms and buildings; performing specialized cleaning and maintenance tasks; and executing related duties as required.


Example of Duties

  • Sweeps, scrubs, dusts, and cleans offices, hallways, workshops, restrooms, classrooms, cafeterias, auditoriums, libraries, gyms, pools, and stairways;
  • Strips, mops, waxes, and buffs floors;
  • Vacuums carpets and pools;
  • Empties and cleans waste containers;
  • Washes windows, walls, and woodwork, and performs touch-up painting;
  • Cleans erasers, blackboards, desks, cabinets, shelves, and window sills;
  • Sweeps sidewalks and curbs, and collects debris from school grounds;
  • Replaces light bulbs;
  • Inspects for broken locks and glass, and reports repair needs;
  • Adjusts desks; sets up tables and chairs;
  • Performs minor repairs on locks, pencil sharpeners, and equipment;
  • Secures buildings and manages lighting and alarm systems;
  • Operates buffers, vacuum cleaners, and other custodial equipment;
  • Raises, lowers, folds, and stores flags;
  • Manages boilers and heaters;
  • Assists in the restoration of facilities and grounds during summer breaks;
  • Directs students and visitors;
  • Patrols areas to deter vandalism and theft;
  • May supervise student workers; and
  • May be on call for emergency situations.
Desirable Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Contemporary cleaning techniques, and the proper use and maintenance of cleaning supplies and equipment; and
  • First aid and safety protocols related to cleaning methods, practices, and equipment.

Ability to:

  • Utilize cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency;
  • Perform physically demanding tasks;
  • Work independently without immediate supervision;
  • Be available for emergency calls;
  • Understand and adhere to a work schedule;
  • Comprehend and execute oral and written instructions;
  • Maintain positive working relationships with students and others encountered during work; and
  • Successfully complete pre-employment functional capacity assessments and physical evaluations.
Experience
Some experience in facility maintenance is preferred; character references may be verified.

Education
Completion of at least the eighth grade is required.

License
A valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License is required.
