Job Summary

The State of California is seeking a highly skilled Medical Officer to join our team. As a Public Health Medical Officer III, you will play a critical role in protecting and improving the welfare and working conditions for California's wage earners.

Under the administrative direction of the Deputy Chief of Health, you will conduct a wide scope of activities and serve as the technical consultant on a major phase of the public safety and health program of the Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA).

You will assist the Deputy Chief of Health in planning, organizing, and directing the Cal/OSHA Medical Unit program to control occupational illnesses and injuries, and establish or improve services in connection with that program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct a wide scope of activities and serve as the technical consultant on a major phase of the public safety and health program of the Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA)
  • Assist the Deputy Chief of Health in planning, organizing, and directing the Cal/OSHA Medical Unit program to control occupational illnesses and injuries
  • Establish or improve services in connection with the Cal/OSHA Medical Unit program
Requirements

To be considered for this position, you must possess the following qualifications:

  • Possession of the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California as determined by the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance or the California Board of Osteopathic Examiners
  • Possession of a valid certificate issued either by the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Surgery, the American Board of Pathology, the American Board of Pediatrics, the American Board of Anesthesiology, the American Board of Radiology, the American Board of Family Practice, the American Board of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine, the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery, the American Osteopathic Board of Pathology, the American Osteopathic Board of Pediatrics, the American Osteopathic Board of Anesthesiology, the American Osteopathic Board of Radiology, the American Osteopathic Board of General Practice, or the American Osteopathic Board of Preventive Medicine
Desirable Qualifications

The following qualifications are highly desirable for this position:

  • A commitment to public service
  • Currently certified in occupational medicine from the American Board of Preventive Medicine, or in occupational/environmental medicine from the American Board of Osteopathic Preventative Medicine
  • Possess Master of Public Health, or equivalent masters or doctoral postgraduate degree
  • Have work experience in occupational medicine
  • Have training and work experience in medical toxicology
  • Excellent customer service
  • Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent grammar, business English, and modern English usage
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Adobe Acrobat
Working Conditions

The work will primarily occur indoors in an office environment (cubicles or small offices). The work may occur in a multi-floor building. The work will involve typical office tools such as computers, telephones, printers, scanners, staplers, and filing apparatus.

The work will involve exposure to typical office noise, extensive time spent in a stationary position, and with repetitive movement involving personal computers and telephones.

The work will involve frequent interaction with coworkers.

The work will sometimes involve travel throughout the State, as required.

Occasional work will occur in other environments (e.g. healthcare, manufacturing or construction job sites) as part of a Cal/OSHA field visit, and will involve significantly different conditions than listed above.
