The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Athletic Field Maintenance Specialist. The ideal applicant will be tasked with the upkeep and enhancement of sports facilities and associated equipment. This role encompasses a comprehensive understanding of both natural grass and synthetic turf, maintenance of baseball and softball infields, irrigation systems, field marking, and the operation of relevant machinery.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct maintenance and implement proper horticultural techniques for sports fields. Prepare fields and adjacent areas for athletic events. Assist during sporting events as required. Safely operate and maintain various equipment including rotary and reel mowers, tractors, field drags, blowers, weed eaters, paint machines, pressure washers, edgers, trimmers, aerators, spreaders, and assorted hand tools. Perform additional tasks as assigned.
Job Requirements:
High school diploma or GED is mandatory. Possession of a valid driver's license. Ability to read, write, and follow instructions in both written and verbal formats. Capability to lift 50-80 lbs. independently. Willingness to work in various weather conditions, including extreme temperatures and precipitation. Preferred knowledge of turf management practices, NCAA field layouts, infield maintenance, field painting, and irrigation. Strong attention to detail in all tasks. Proven ability to effectively use and maintain a variety of groundskeeping equipment. Availability for emergency calls 24/7, if necessary. Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required. Compliance with the University’s criteria for operating state vehicles. Registered Technician's License for pesticide application or the ability to obtain within six months of employment. State Fertilizer Applicator Certification or the ability to obtain within six months of employment. Experience in maintaining athletic fields to NCAA standards.
