Job Overview

Position: School Vehicle Repair Specialist
Department: Transportation Services

Employment Duration: Full-Time, 12 Months
Status: Non-Exempt

Shift: Evening Hours during Academic Year (Daytime in Summer)
Compensation: Starting at $20.38 per hour

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct routine maintenance on school transport vehicles following a scheduled plan.
  • Perform necessary repairs on school buses and related vehicles as required.
  • Inspect buses prior to the academic year and apply the required inspection sticker as mandated.
  • Assist in preparing the bus fleet for the annual state inspection by the Highway Patrol.
  • Install specialized equipment in buses as needed.
  • Transport spare buses to breakdown sites and strive to return disabled vehicles to the maintenance facility.

Qualifications:

A high school diploma or equivalent is mandatory. A minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience as a vehicle mechanic is required, with comprehensive knowledge of both diesel and gasoline engines. Experience in maintaining school buses is advantageous. Candidates must possess or be able to obtain their own hand tools. A valid Inspector-Mechanic license from the State of Missouri is necessary, along with a Commercial Driver's License free of air brake restrictions.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to sit, stand, bend, and reach while performing vehicle maintenance. Capability to operate various types of vehicles and to access all areas of vehicles for repairs. Ability to lift components as necessary and navigate throughout the transportation facility.

Mental Requirements:

Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment with strict deadlines. Flexibility to adjust to changing operational needs. Strong interpersonal and public relations skills are essential. Capacity to manage high-stress situations effectively. Proficient verbal and written communication skills are required, along with the ability to comprehend and respond to diverse job-related topics.

Work Environment:

This position is based in a vehicle maintenance facility that is heated but lacks air conditioning. Summer temperatures can be significantly high, and work may occasionally occur outdoors in varying weather conditions. The noise level in the shop can be elevated.
