POSITION SUMMARY

The Clinical Staff Nurse is a proficient and seasoned Registered Nurse (RN) dedicated to delivering exceptional nursing care and overseeing patient management.

Reporting to the Medical-Surgical Telemetry Manager, the Clinical Staff Nurse is accountable for 12-hour shifts, focusing on organizing, planning, directing, coordinating, and providing high-quality, individualized patient and family-centered care based on the Watson Model of Care for a designated patient group. This includes recognizing and addressing the unique needs and considerations related to Age and Population Specific awareness.

This role necessitates a comprehensive understanding and active engagement in fulfilling the Mission of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital. Employees are expected to embody behaviors that align with the Core Values and support the strategic objectives and quality improvement initiatives of the hospital.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The nurse employs the nursing process as a systematic problem-solving model, leveraging their expertise to anticipate and fulfill patient and family needs. Nursing assessments are strategically focused on areas that yield the most benefit for the specific patient population.

The nurse is responsible for prioritizing and organizing patient care, ensuring that all planned interventions are executed effectively. They demonstrate the necessary knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care tailored to the needs of patients on the assigned unit.

Utilizing current literature and research findings, the nurse applies critical thinking skills to make informed clinical decisions. They actively contribute to the Hospital's Patient Satisfaction efforts through positive interactions with patients, families, and colleagues.

The nurse establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship with patients throughout their healthcare journey, respecting patient rights as a fundamental aspect of the nurse-patient relationship, in line with the hospital's values and mission.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting hourly patient rounds.
  • Utilizing SBAR communication for all hand-off situations.
  • Documenting patient care comprehensively, including assessments, interdisciplinary plans of care, implementation, evaluation, and adherence to the Watson Model of Care.
  • Proactively addressing variables that may affect patient comfort and adjusting interventions accordingly.
  • Supporting patients and families in maximizing their sense of control and participation in recovery.
  • Coordinating with Care Managers to facilitate interdisciplinary discharge planning.
  • Reviewing patient orders and promptly communicating any significant changes in patient conditions to physicians and team members.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of nursing interventions and documenting outcomes in the interdisciplinary plan of care.
  • Supervising and mentoring ancillary nursing personnel, ensuring evaluations are completed for registry and float staff.
  • Maintaining a professional appearance and adhering to dress code standards.
  • Ensuring a safe and clean environment that meets regulatory standards.
  • Participating in the implementation of the unit-specific Quality and Performance Improvement Plan.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A. Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing is preferred. Candidates with an Associate degree in Nursing, Nursing Diploma, or equivalent qualifications will also be considered. Internal candidates who have successfully completed the MLKCH Versant Nurse Residency Program will be prioritized.

B. Qualifications/Experience: A minimum of one year of clinical nursing experience is required, with at least 12 months of Med/Surg/Telemetry or Critical Care nursing experience preferred, subject to regulatory guidelines and managerial discretion. A current California Nursing license is mandatory, along with basic EKG competence. Certifications in Progressive Critical Care Nursing and Medical/Surgical Nursing are preferred.

C. Special Skills/Knowledge: Bilingual skills (Spanish) are preferred. Basic computer skills and a Dysrhythmia Course certificate are advantageous. Experience with Electronic Medical Records is preferred. Current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) are required, along with Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Blue Card certification within 90 days of hire.
