Job Summary

The Pharmacy Technician III - Student Pharmacist PRN-Investigational Drug Service is a key member of the Northwestern Memorial Healthcare team, responsible for providing exceptional patient care and support in the dispensing areas. This role reflects the organization's mission, vision, and values, and adheres to the Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepares medication orders for inpatients, ensuring accurate and timely dispensing.
  • Prepares prescriptions for outpatients, maintaining confidentiality and adhering to regulatory standards.
  • Picks up orders and delivers medications to nursing units, promoting efficient patient care.
  • Schedules intravenous admixture solutions according to patient medical records, reporting any variances to pharmacists.
  • Answers telephone calls according to hospital policy, screening calls to determine if they require pharmacist or technician handling.
  • Enters new drug orders and renewal/refill information into the computerized patient medication profile, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Uses the computer system to assist in all dispensing and inquiry functions, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of system capabilities.
  • Compares patient medication bins with pharmacy and nursing records, returning unnecessary and/or outdated medication to the pharmacy.
  • Reconciles use records and reports any discrepancies to pharmacists, ensuring accurate inventory management.
  • Receives, prepares, and distributes floor stock requisitions and requisitions for other clinical locations, maintaining efficient inventory levels.
  • Compounds dosage forms needed for dispensing to patients, adhering to regulatory standards and quality control procedures.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate inventory levels in the dispensing areas, ensuring timely restocking and minimizing waste.
  • Packages extemporaneous and STAT single doses of medications under the supervision of pharmacists, maintaining accurate records and quality control.
  • Prepares and maintains emergency medication systems, ensuring timely and accurate dispensing.
  • Prepares sterile products for administration to patients, selecting proper diluents and vehicles and determining stability.
  • Prepares cytotoxic agents for administration, employing hospital and department aseptic and protective procedures.
  • Plans and performs daily tasks required to provide department services under the direction of pharmacists, ensuring efficient and effective patient care.
  • Prepares and delivers narcotics and narcotic admixtures, conducting narcotic perpetual inventories as directed.
  • Meets quality and quantity requirements for new orders, unit doses, and IV admixtures, ensuring timely and accurate dispensing.
  • Ensures compliance with hazardous waste collection and disposal procedures, maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
Quality Management Responsibilities

This position assists in maintaining emergency carts, inventory, and controlled substances records, ensuring accurate completion of responsibilities and an efficient, error-free drug distribution system.
