Job Description:
Responsible for providing essential breeding services for various rodent species utilized in biomedical research.
Tasks include executing a weekly technical work list prepared by colony managers or senior team members, which encompasses setting up breeding environments using diverse mating strategies, collecting tail snips in accordance with established identification protocols, and monitoring animals for indications of illness, injury, or behavioral changes.
Involves restraining and handling animals for medical treatment. Maintains comprehensive animal records. Identifies incoming animals and houses them based on specific criteria. Prepares outgoing animal shipments according to established guidelines.Manages the Rodent Models Breeding Core Database. Generates Cage Cards for breeding cages, weaning cages, incoming orders, and outgoing shipments. Ensures sanitation of surgical and technical equipment, assembles packs, and verifies sterilization. Maintains sterile packs in designated areas, ensuring they are current and replaced as necessary. Conducts euthanasia using carbon dioxide, with cervical dislocation as a secondary method. Performs decapitation of newborn rodents post-euthanasia. Prepares specialized diets and medications.
Assists Senior Technicians with Rodent Colony Management, participates in meetings with Investigators and research personnel, and collaborates on understanding Punnett Squares and other technical or managerial tasks as assigned by the Transgenic Breeding Colony Supervisors and Managers.
Required to stay updated on necessary training and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in Policy Manager and log hours worked using facility computers or designated equipment during regular working hours.
Additional responsibilities as assigned.
Expected Salary:
$17.28/hr
Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma or equivalent; valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prefer a high school diploma or higher with a minimum of 3 years' experience in research animal care within a research institution or similar environment.
Special Instructions to Applicants:
Working hours are from 7 AM to 3:30 PM; rotating weekend shifts may be required.
A criminal background check is mandatory.
This is a time-limited position.
This position is eligible for veteran's preference.
