Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Animal Care Technician I to join our team at the University of Florida. As a key member of our Animal Care Services department, you will be responsible for providing exceptional care to animals and maintaining a safe and healthy environment for our research and teaching programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide daily care to animals, including feeding, cleaning, and monitoring their health and well-being.
  • Perform routine animal caretaking, facility maintenance, and cage wash duties as directed by Operations Manager or their designee.
  • Follow strict adherence to SOPs, IACUC, and EHS safety procedures and policies.
  • Report any suspected or actual deviations to SOPs or non-routine situations immediately to Operations Manager or their designee.
  • Observe animals, recognize and report early manifestations of disease, and restrain animals for examination or injections.
  • Collect urine and/or fecal samples, collect specimens for clinical analysis, and obtain vital signs as directed by veterinary staff.
  • Set up and test specialty caging for bio-containment areas designated hazardous, ABSL2, and ABSL3.
  • Validate autoclave cycles with Biological Indicators before releasing potentially hazardous materials from bio-containment areas designated ABSL2 and ABSL3.
  • Ensure Effluent Decon System is maintained and serviced as needed.
  • Ensure containment facilities and support areas are properly stocked, cleaned, and maintained.
  • Perform euthanasia of rodents using carbon dioxide with approved alternate secondary method.
  • Observe, document, and report changes in environmental parameters outside acceptable ranges.
  • Restrains and handles animals for treatment, sanitizes equipment and animal holding facilities, and ensures housing and environmental compliance with the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
  • Perform scheduled quality control tests of equipment and submit samples to ACS diagnostic lab for processing.
  • Assist in receiving and rotating feed and supplies, transport caging supplies between animal rooms and cage wash rooms, and sanitize cage washing rooms and other support areas.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of relevant experience; certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.
  • Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
  • Maintain a valid state driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BS degree or higher with at least 3 years' experience with research animal care at a research institution or other appropriate environment and one year of relevant experience; or certification as Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.
  • Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
  • Maintains a valid state driver's license.
