Aquatic Safety Specialist

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled Aquatic Safety Specialist to join our team at the YMCA of the Triangle Area. As a Lifeguard and Safety Expert, you will be responsible for maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas, while creating a positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain active surveillance of the pool area and respond to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
- Know and review all emergency procedures and complete related reports as required.
- Maintain effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
- Know, understand, and consistently apply safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and perform chemical testing when not guarding as required.
- Attend all staff meetings and in-service training.
- Model relationship-building skills in all interactions.
- Maintain regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Certifications required for this position include CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen.
- Current YMCA Lifeguard or equivalent certification.
- Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard.
- Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatics environment.
- Remain alert with no lapses in consciousness.
- See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
- Move objects with a weight of up to 50 pounds.
