Job Summary

Northwestern University seeks a highly skilled System Administrator to join its IT Operations team. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of the university's IT infrastructure, including system installation and management, monitoring and performance tuning, diagnostics and troubleshooting, user support coordination, backup and storage management, data center maintenance, and other related tasks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide recommendations regarding infrastructure planning and budgeting.
  • Ensure data/media recoverability by implementing a schedule of system backups and database archive operations.
  • Support media management through internal methods and procedures or through offsite storage and retrieval services.
  • Develop and promote standard operating procedures.
  • Conduct routine infrastructure audits to ensure compliance with established standards, policies, and configuration guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive infrastructure configuration database/library of all supporting documentation.
  • Create and maintain user accounts, security, permissions, and file systems in accordance with standards and operational requirements.
  • Perform infrastructure installations and upgrades.
  • Schedule installations and upgrades and maintain them in accordance with established IT policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and tune the system to achieve optimum performance levels.
  • Ensure infrastructure integrity by evaluating, implementing, and managing appropriate solutions.
  • In collaboration with system administrators, perform ongoing support and maintenance for systems and related applications.
  • Prioritize, troubleshoot, and resolve issues.
Requirements

The successful candidate will have a bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as computer science or information technology, and at least 2 years of experience in system administration or a related field. The candidate should have a strong understanding of IT infrastructure, system installation and management, monitoring and performance tuning, diagnostics and troubleshooting, user support coordination, backup and storage management, data center maintenance, and other related tasks.

The candidate should also have excellent communication and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
