Position Overview

The Michigan State University College of Law is seeking to appoint two full-time, fixed-term faculty members for the roles of directors in the Housing Justice Clinic and the Public Defender Clinic.

Role Responsibilities

The successful candidates will be responsible for:

Housing Justice Clinic

This clinic focuses on providing legal advocacy to low and moderate-income residents facing housing-related issues. The clinic actively participates in community programs aimed at preventing evictions and improving housing conditions. Key areas of focus include:
  • Defending against eviction actions.
  • Addressing housing discrimination and public housing matters.
  • Supporting tenant organizing efforts.
  • Promoting affordable housing initiatives.

Public Defender Clinic

The Public Defender Clinic offers students the opportunity to represent indigent defendants in criminal cases. Responsibilities include:
  • Engaging in legal analysis and appellate writing.
  • Participating in oral arguments.
  • Collaborating with trial counsel and interacting with clients.

Qualifications

Applicants must possess:
  • A Juris Doctor (J.D.) or equivalent degree.
  • Admission to practice before the highest court of any state, with eligibility for the State Bar of Michigan.
  • A minimum of five years of law-related professional experience post-law school.

Additional Requirements for Public Defender Clinic Director

In addition to the above qualifications, candidates must have:
  • Significant experience in representing indigent clients, particularly in criminal appellate litigation.
  • Familiarity with the appointment of counsel in Michigan criminal appeals.
  • Experience in securing funding for indigent defense initiatives.

Desired Attributes

Preference will be given to candidates with substantial teaching experience in clinical legal education.
