Key Responsibilities

As a Battery Algorithms and Controls Engineer at Ford Motor Company, you will be responsible for developing state estimation and control algorithms for next-generation battery management systems. Your work will be deployed on both embedded and cloud-based targets.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Design, develop, and validate various BMS control and state estimation algorithms, including SOC, SOH, SOT, SOE, Power Prediction, and Fast Charge Controls.
  • Develop battery models using electrical and physics-based modeling approaches.
  • Document and maintain algorithm requirements & specifications.
  • Validate algorithm function and performance through MIL/SIL/HIL testing.
  • Develop high-quality firmware for battery management systems, enabling continuous improvements and optimizations for high-volume applications through over-the-air (OTA) updates.
  • Collaborate with platform software, testing, and cloud analytics teams to implement and refine algorithms, and integrate feedback from field and lab data.
  • Support battery pack and vehicle integration efforts.
  • Support BMS hardware design and component selection.
  • Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis efforts to identify and resolve algorithm-related issues and implement corrective actions to improve system performance and reliability.
  • Stay current with industry and research advancements in battery science, translating cutting-edge research into BMS functionality enhancements.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years developing BMS algorithms for automotive or mission-critical systems.
  • Strong knowledge of lithium-ion battery cell (LFP, NCA, and NMC) and pack design technologies.
  • Experience developing control algorithms in Embedded C.
  • Experience modeling lithium-ion batteries with equivalent-circuit and physics-based methods.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, Python, and similar tools for battery equivalent-circuit and physics-based modeling.
  • Strong knowledge of battery cell testing techniques, including GITT, HPPC, and EIS.
  • Theoretical expertise in probability and statistics.
