POSITION SUMMARY
Under general supervision, the role involves performing foundational engineering tasks related to the design and execution of public infrastructure projects, including roadways, traffic systems, parks, municipal facilities, and water/wastewater systems. Responsibilities include assisting in the preparation of plans, drawings, calculations, and specifications, contributing to project management as part of a collaborative team, and executing related duties as assigned.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential functions of this position may include, but are not limited to:
- Supporting engineering functions for public works design and construction initiatives, encompassing roadways, traffic systems, parks, municipal facilities, and water/wastewater systems.
- Providing assistance at public counters to developers, builders, contractors, and the general public regarding engineering policies and procedures; reviewing modifications to approved plans and specifications; processing various permits.
- Assisting construction inspectors in interpreting plans and resolving issues during construction; reviewing as-built plans for compliance with original specifications.
- Helping in the preparation of engineering designs, specifications, cost estimates, and quantity assessments for public works projects; obtaining necessary easements or permits for construction.
- Creating maps, legal descriptions, and other documentation; utilizing specialized software including computer-aided design (CAD).
- Participating in budget preparation and administration for assigned projects; monitoring expenditures and making budget recommendations.
- Assisting in the issuance of requests for proposals and contracts to consultants and contractors; preparing engineering conditions for project reviews.
- Collecting and analyzing traffic data, preparing reports related to traffic counts, speed surveys, and other traffic engineering areas.
- Assisting in field surveys and construction surveys.
- Exercising judgment in accordance with accepted civil engineering practices and relevant laws and codes.
- Preparing various reports, correspondence, and maintaining project documentation.
- Performing additional duties as required.
Knowledge:
- Understanding of public works engineering operations and construction programs.
- Familiarity with civil engineering design and construction principles.
- Basic knowledge of traffic engineering principles.
- Terminology and techniques used in civil engineering report preparation.
- Materials and tools utilized in civil engineering projects.
- Mathematical principles applicable to engineering tasks.
- Construction practices and materials.
- Relevant codes, regulations, and standards.
- Drafting techniques and CAD systems.
- Modern office technology including computers and software applications.
- Knowledge of pertinent laws and safety regulations.
- Ability to learn and assist in developing civil engineering plans and specifications.
- Capacity to interpret and explain engineering policies and procedures.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Physical capability to perform assigned duties.

Experience:
- Two years of experience in a para-professional civil engineering role.
- A Bachelor's degree in civil or traffic engineering or a related field.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certification.
