Position Summary
The Animal Technologist plays a crucial role within the Animal Resources Facility (ARF) by reporting to the Technical Services Manager or Technologist Supervisor.

This position is responsible for delivering clinical care and treatment to research animals as outlined by the ARF Technical Services Manager/Supervisor and under the guidance of the Attending Veterinarian.

In collaboration with the Technical Services Manager, the Animal Technologist may assist in the logistics of packing and shipping sentinel animals for diagnostic evaluations.

Identification of animals is performed through methods such as ear punch, ear tag number, or toe clip, and there may be opportunities to support technical tasks as needed.

Located in a vibrant community, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is at the forefront of groundbreaking advancements in cancer research and patient care.

Our mission is to conquer cancer, HIV/AIDS, and related diseases through innovative research and compassionate care for patients from diverse backgrounds, particularly focusing on high-risk and underserved populations.

We are dedicated to conducting pioneering research that enhances treatment options, educating future physician/researchers, and collaborating with esteemed partners, including other Harvard Medical School-affiliated institutions.

Key Responsibilities

- Routine handling, restraint, and identification of common laboratory animals, including techniques such as ear notching, tagging, tattooing, and toe clipping.

- Monitoring animal colonies for signs of injury, illness, or mortality, and accurately documenting any observations.

- Maintaining comprehensive animal health records for ongoing treatments within the HMR/IACUC database.

- Assisting in the separation of overcrowded cages and ensuring accurate transcriptions of animal information onto cage cards and electronic records.

- Supporting the Technologists in the collection and identification of sentinel animals for scheduled shipments for pathogen testing.

- Keeping precise records, including technical service documentation, electronic cage cards, animal census, breeding records, and anesthesia machine logs.

- Aiding the Technical Services Manager or Principal Technologist with intramural and quarantine animal transfers.

Qualifications

- High School Diploma or GED is required; a BA/BS degree is preferred.

- At least one year of experience in an AAALAC-accredited laboratory animal facility is preferred.

- AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LAT) level is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Eagerness to learn various injection techniques and blood collection methods.

- Ability to assist the Technical Services Manager with animal transfers and logistics.

- Proficiency in computer applications for word processing and database management to support laboratory operations.

- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in record-keeping.

- Excellent communication and collaboration skills within a multidisciplinary team.

- Basic computer skills, including familiarity with spreadsheets and related software.
