Job Summary

The University of Vermont seeks a visionary and experienced professional to serve as the Director of the Silver Special Collections Library. As a key member of the University Libraries' senior leadership team, the Director will provide strategic leadership, foster a collaborative and inclusive environment, and drive innovation in teaching, research, and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership and Strategic Planning
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive vision for the Silver Special Collections Library, aligning with the University Libraries' and the University's strategic initiatives.
    • Provide strategic guidance and oversight to the library's collections, programs, and services.
  • Collaboration and Community Engagement
    • Foster strong relationships with faculty, students, and community members to promote the library's collections and services.
    • Develop and implement outreach programs to engage with diverse stakeholders and promote the library's role in the community.
  • Collection Development and Management
    • Oversee the acquisition, cataloging, and preservation of rare books, manuscripts, and other special collections materials.
    • Develop and implement policies and procedures for collection development, access, and use.
  • Staff Supervision and Development
    • Lead and manage a team of librarians and staff, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities.
    • Develop and implement training programs to enhance staff skills and knowledge.
  • Financial Management
    • Manage the library's budget, including endowment and gift funds, to support collections, programs, and services.
    • Develop and implement financial plans to ensure the long-term sustainability of the library.
  • Communication and Marketing
    • Develop and implement marketing and communication strategies to promote the library's collections and services.
    • Collaborate with University Communications and other stakeholders to promote the library's role in the University's strategic initiatives.
Requirements
  • Master's Degree
    • Master's degree in Library Science or a related field from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Leadership and Management Experience
    • Proven experience in leadership and management roles, with a track record of success in strategic planning, team development, and financial management.
  • Collection Development and Management
    • Experience in collection development, management, and preservation, with a strong understanding of rare books, manuscripts, and other special collections materials.
  • Communication and Marketing
    • Excellent communication and marketing skills, with experience in promoting libraries and their services to diverse stakeholders.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
    • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with experience in promoting inclusive environments and services.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Second Graduate Degree
    • Master's degree in a related field, such as archives, museum studies, or a subject area related to the library's collections.
  • Language Skills
    • Proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English.
  • Grant Writing and Management
    • Experience in grant writing and management, with a track record of securing funding for library projects and initiatives.
