Ophthalmic Care Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Ophthalmic Technician I to join our team at Tufts Medical Center. As an Ophthalmic Technician I, you will play a vital role in facilitating patient care and flow by performing preliminary work-ups, including history taking and various screenings and diagnostic tests.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare patients for physician evaluations by obtaining patient physical history, including chief complaint, reason for visit, current medications, allergies, past and current ocular and medical history.
- Perform various screening and tasks as ordered by the physician, including visual acuity, lensometry, refractions, keratometry, pupil evaluation, measurement of eye pressure, and drop instillation.
- Assist with diagnostic tests and ocular imaging, including Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Visual Fields, Fundus Photo, Topography, IOL master, K5, and other tests as determined necessary through patient assessment.
- Perform complex exams, including ultrasound testing and electrophysiology testing.
- Assist patients with contact lens removal and reinsertion.
- Prepare patient consent forms and assist physicians with in-office procedures as needed.
- Set up exam rooms, ensuring they are clean, organized, stocked with necessary medications, supplies, instruments, forms, and patient education materials.
- Facilitate clinic flow and scribe components of the exam into the Electronic Health Record.
- Comply with all local, state, and federal regulations and laws governing the performance of this position within the Ophthalmology department.
- Ensure proper cleaning and disinfection of instruments and supplies per hospital and manufacturer recommendations, and assist with calibration and maintenance of equipment.
- Assist with triaging or emergency calls, and assist with orientating and training of new technicians under the direction of the supervisor.
- High school diploma or equivalent, plus at least two years' experience in a supervised setting as an ophthalmic technician.
- Bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred.
- Current JCAHPO certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant is required.
- Current CPR certification is preferred and will be required within three months of hire.
This position requires close contact with children, adolescents, elderly, and sensory handicapped patients, with some exposure to blood and hypodermic needles. The work environment is busy and involves several physicians, and may require floating to satellite offices and providing own transportation.
