Job Summary:

As an Optometrist with Kaiser Permanente, you will work under the general direction and supervision of an exempt optometrist or exempt designee, performing routine procedures using independent professional judgment in the practice of optometry within the scope of the laws of the state of California, the rules and regulations of the California Board of Optometry, and the policies of Kaiser Permanente.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct thorough patient histories, including chief complaints, relevant symptoms, ocular health, family and medical history, medications, and current spectacle/contact lens data, to manage patients' vision and ocular health needs.
  • Perform minimum and additional testing as needed, based on patient-specific needs, and adequately document findings using standard ophthalmic equipment, including retinoscopy, subjective refraction, lensometry, visual fields, mobility and pupil testing, slit lamp examination, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy, gonioscopy, fundus contact lens, tear function testing, Amsler grid, confrontation fields, etc.
  • Accurately interpret clinical exam data, make sound clinical diagnoses, and take appropriate actions to address patients' chief complaints and ensure ocular health and visual needs are met, clearly documenting impressions and clinical action plans in patient charts, including referrals to other providers, long-term medical management, and/or optical and therapeutic prescriptions dispensed.
  • Utilize tests and procedures to detect and manage disorders common to the elderly, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, actively communicating with optical, ophthalmology, support staff, and fellow OD teams to optimize quality and clinical care and service to patients.
  • Maintain all licensing and job requirements, including CE, CPR, safety training, and PPD.
  • Dictate/write referral and information letters to other providers or agencies, as appropriate, or otherwise communicate with parents, teachers, or other providers as necessary, performing other related duties such as completing school forms, DMV, FAA, and other similar documents.
