The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) is seeking applications for the role of Assistant or Associate Professor of Biochemistry. We are in search of a committed and innovative professional who aims to collaborate with our faculty in shaping the future of osteopathic physicians. Our mission emphasizes excellence in education, research, clinical practice, and community service.

POSITION OVERVIEW: Faculty members in Biochemistry are expected to engage as educators in Biochemistry and Medical Genetics, facilitate Problem-Based Learning (PBL), mentor osteopathic medical students, conduct interviews for prospective students, and contribute to the college's mission through research and community service. The ideal candidate will possess the knowledge and qualifications necessary to teach Biochemistry and Medical Genetics at the medical college level.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following academic tasks may be assigned to Biochemistry Faculty members:
  • Instruct Biochemistry and Medical Genetics to preclinical medical students and post-baccalaureate students;
  • Develop lectures, lecture notes, learning objectives, PowerPoint presentations, exam questions, and syllabi;
  • Engage in curriculum development and assessment;
  • Participate in assigned committees;
  • Act as a content expert in their field;
  • Facilitate Problem-Based Learning (PBL) sessions;
  • Conduct interviews for prospective College of Medicine candidates;
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to assigned students;
  • Advise at least one student organization;
  • Prepare demonstrations and small group discussions, coordinating educational resources with other faculty;
  • Create evaluation tools to assess student progress and identify areas for improvement;
  • Attend approved meetings that promote professional development;
  • Contribute to overall student success, including advising and monitoring student outcomes;
  • Support the mission of LECOM by participating in institutional fundraising and community outreach;
  • Engage in scholarly activities to enhance the student learning experience;
  • Represent LECOM in the community through board service and participation in outreach initiatives;
  • Follow directives from the Associate Dean of Pre-Clinical Education;
  • Be available for instructional duties during assigned hours;
  • Accept additional responsibilities as needed by the institution.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or Genetics, with prior teaching experience in Biochemistry and Medical Genetics at the medical college level. Evidence of research productivity and potential for securing external research funding is required. A strong desire to teach in a student-centered environment using innovative methods is essential. Excellent organizational, communication, teaching, and decision-making skills are necessary, along with the ability to collaborate with faculty from various disciplines.
