Aquatics and Safety Specialist

The YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South seeks a highly skilled and dedicated Aquatics and Safety Specialist to join our team. As a Swim Instructor and Safety Coordinator, you will be responsible for maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for our students, while also promoting water safety and aquatics education.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide swimming and water safety instruction to students of all ages and abilities.
- Plan and implement program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values.
- Assist in creating new approaches to serve the needs of program participants.
- Maintain constant supervision of students, identify students who need assistance, and support students as necessary to ensure a positive learning environment.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings.
- Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with parents and caregivers, and other staff.
- Train and supervise class aides as assigned.
Requirements:
- Minimum age of 16.
- Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration certifications and child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
- YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent or ability to get certification.
- Demonstrated ability to recognize students who may need assistance.
- Demonstrated ability to recognize and remedy hazardous and dangerous situations.
- Demonstrated ability to swim in shallow and deep water and tread water.
- Patient and able to communicate with all ages and levels of students, parents and caregivers, and other Y staff and volunteers.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- Lift equipment and a small – to average – size child.
- Remain in the pool area at all times.
- Remain alert, with no lapses of consciousness, in a warm environment with air temperatures of 80 degrees or higher.
- Recognize distress signals.
- Support child or adult body weight in the water.
- Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
- Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
- Remain in water ranging from 80-90 degrees for one to four hours.
- Communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance, in normal and loud situations.
- Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
