Position Overview

The Northrop Grumman Propulsion Systems and Controls (PS&C) facility in Elkton, Maryland, has been at the forefront of solid-propellant rocket operations since 1948. Today, this facility designs, develops, and manufactures solid-propellant propulsion and ordnance systems for a diverse array of government and commercial clients. It also serves as the central hub for offsite engineering and testing facilities.

Role Responsibilities

As the head of the Motion Controls engineering division, comprising approximately 50 engineers, managers, and technicians, you will be tasked with formulating strategies to bolster technology development, product innovation, market analysis, and the expansion of this segment of the Missile Products/Propulsion Systems & Controls business. This role necessitates technical proficiency in motion controls for propulsion systems, a proven track record in business development and client relations, and the ability to collaborate effectively with various functions and senior management in a team-oriented environment to achieve business goals.

Key Duties Include:

  • Crafting and implementing a strategic plan to enhance the Motion Controls market segment, including nurturing relationships with both potential and existing internal and external clients.
  • Developing a technical roadmap to pinpoint critical technology opportunities that drive innovation and the development of new products and technologies, ensuring a competitive edge in the marketplace while balancing performance, cost, and timelines.
  • Leading a geographically diverse technical team, focusing on talent acquisition, team cohesion, employee development, and ensuring a robust skill set across software, control system simulation, electrical engineering, and system integration & testing disciplines.
  • Overseeing the execution of Motion Control projects, emphasizing technical excellence, adherence to documented standards, process enhancement, and meeting budgetary and scheduling objectives.
  • Establishing and promoting high standards for quality and safety through peer reviews, process control, and performance evaluations.
  • Maintaining cutting-edge knowledge regarding technology and engineering best practices through ongoing education, conferences, and industry events.
  • Representing and communicating Northrop Grumman's technical capabilities and technologies to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Presenting deliverables at program technical reviews, proposal evaluations, or other technical discussions.

Success in this position will demand sound scientific and technical judgment, innovative thinking, and exceptional interpersonal and management skills to effectively plan, motivate, and achieve objectives through your team.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering with 15 years of experience or 13 years of experience with a Master's degree in Engineering.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and eligible to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance.
  • Comprehensive technical expertise and practical knowledge of software, electrical, and mechanical engineering disciplines related to the design, integration, and testing of motion controls for propulsion systems.
  • Strong leadership, influence, and project management capabilities.
  • 5+ years of experience in project, program, or personnel leadership.
  • Excellent verbal, presentation, and written communication skills across all organizational levels.
  • Willingness to travel (10-20%) to engage with remote team members, current/potential clients, suppliers, and company leadership.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Engineering, Business Administration, or Leadership.
  • Extensive experience in the design, development, and testing of motion control systems for propulsion applications.
  • Active Secret Clearance.
  • Strong background in Lean/Agile methodologies and proven results from process improvement initiatives.
  • Experience in securing new business through cross-functional collaboration.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in managing internal client relationships, prioritization, and delegation.
  • Ability to balance personnel management, technical/process management, and strategic/new business aspects of this role.

Note: This position falls under a Federal Explosives License issued by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for this location. Candidates hired into this role will be required to complete and submit an Employee Possessor Questionnaire to ATF for approval to be a possessor.

Salary Range: $172,500 - $258,700

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers various factors when determining base salary offers, including the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills, and current market conditions. Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions and allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. Additionally, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plans, company-paid holidays, and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
