Job Overview

Position: Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP/RRT)

The Respiratory Care Practitioner is responsible for executing routine therapeutic, diagnostic, and emergency cardiopulmonary interventions for patients within the facilities of PAM Health. This role also includes ensuring that all medical equipment is functioning correctly. The practitioner may perform phlebotomy and basic laboratory assessments as required or requested, along with other related responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care Duties

  • Administers all scheduled and prescribed therapies safely and promptly.
  • Keeps thorough and precise records of all performed activities.
  • Exhibits proficient use of the medication dispensing system.
  • Demonstrates expertise in pulmonary function testing, adhering to established policies and ATS standards.
  • Contributes to inventory management.
  • Participates in the maintenance and quality assurance of the blood gas laboratory.
  • Collaborates effectively as a team member within the department.
  • Delivers work with accuracy and professionalism, mindful of patient and departmental needs.
  • Monitors pressure-volume relationships and evaluates ventilation and blood gas metrics.
  • Obtains blood gas samples using appropriate techniques and analyzes them with a blood gas analyzer.
  • Collects venous samples correctly and prepares them for processing, analyzing when necessary.
  • Conducts reliable basic spirometry assessments.
  • Measures vital capacity, negative inspiratory force, and oxygen saturation levels.
  • Reviews patient histories and provides suitable therapy recommendations, documenting them in interdisciplinary notes.
  • Executes electrocardiograms and Holter monitor tests accurately, ensuring correct lead placement and documentation.
  • Assesses and interprets age-specific data, including patient responses to treatments.
  • Engages with family members or caregivers to involve them in the patient's care planning.
  • Assists in orienting new staff to departmental policies and procedures, validating their competencies as assigned.
  • Ensures all equipment is operational and aids in resolving user-related issues.
  • Keeps current maintenance logs for all required equipment.
  • Documents charges for provided therapies promptly, ensuring compliance with system, hospital, and departmental policies for accuracy and completeness.
  • Accurately transcribes verbal orders into patient charts, ensuring all modifications are communicated to the assigned licensed nurse.

Qualifications

Licensure, Education, and Training: Candidates must be certified or licensed in the state of practice for respiratory care. Current BLS and ACLS certifications are required. Blood gas licensure is necessary for employment in specific states.

Experience: A minimum of one year of clinical respiratory experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of all respiratory care modalities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and provide instruction to patients, families, and staff, both verbally and in writing.
