Position Overview

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) – Certified Nurse Midwife is responsible for delivering holistic health services to women throughout their life stages, from adolescence to menopause. This role encompasses various medical disciplines, including prenatal care, labor and delivery support, health assessments, diagnostic evaluations, and management of preventive health measures, normal gynecological care, and minor medical issues as per established practice guidelines. The APRN will also implement, interpret, and manage diagnostic screenings and prescribe necessary medications and therapeutic interventions. Patient education on health improvement and preventive strategies is a key component of this role. The APRN will lead and coordinate the healthcare team in both on-campus and off-campus clinical environments, while also supervising and mentoring graduate students and resident physicians in clinical settings, lectures, and skills assessment labs. Engagement in research activities is also expected.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties


• Conduct comprehensive physical examinations, gather and document patient data, manage labor, and perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures along with laboratory tests.


• Evaluate patients for admission and manage the admission process as necessary. Independently oversee and deliver care for low-risk women in labor at or beyond 37 weeks of gestation.


• Document initial prenatal history and physical assessments for patients in the obstetric emergency room and labor and delivery settings.


• Provide routine prenatal and intrapartum care, ensuring accurate documentation of admission, antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum orders for low-risk patients.


• Deliver outpatient prenatal, gynecological, and women's health services for low-risk individuals.


• Assess and evaluate complex cases in high-risk obstetric clinics, reproductive health clinics, and labor and delivery, collaborating with OB/GYN for management plans and documentation.


• Administer care in accordance with collaborative practice agreements. Provide treatment for sexually transmitted infections to patient partners.


• Conduct initial evaluations of infants and initiate emergency interventions as required. Interpret diagnostic results and prescribe medications, including controlled substances. Administer local anesthesia, perform routine deliveries, and conduct episiotomies.


• Collaborate effectively with other members of the obstetric care team.


• Provide continuous in-house coverage for midwifery services, including backup call responsibilities.


• Assist in scheduling patients for upcoming procedures, coordinating with other services, and completing necessary documentation and insurance forms.


• Undertake additional related duties and projects as the clinical practice evolves.

Professional Development


• Integrate evidence-based practices and clinical expertise into decision-making processes. Participate in departmental and hospital quality improvement initiatives and peer review activities.


• Identify and engage in quality improvement projects within the practice environment, implementing changes as necessary.


• Pursue formal and independent learning opportunities to enhance clinical and professional skills and knowledge.


• Engage in obstetrical, gynecological, and midwifery research initiatives.

Teaching and Community Engagement


• Contribute to the educational development of nursing students, medical students, residents, and other healthcare professionals through supervision, teaching, and mentorship.


• Participate in lectures, skills laboratories, case discussions, and assist in curriculum development and instructional activities. Responsible for evaluating the performance of Advanced Practice nursing students, medical students, and residents.


• Engage in community outreach activities to educate patients, their families, and community members.


• Maintain a faculty appointment to ensure clinical privileges within the University of Illinois health system.


• Perform additional related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements

Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctorate of Nursing Practice is required. Graduation from an accredited APRN program. Current licensure as a Professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, as well as Certified Nurse Midwife in the State of Illinois is required.
