Position Overview
The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) – Certified Nurse Midwife delivers extensive healthcare services for women throughout their life stages, including prenatal care, labor and delivery, and preventive health management. This role encompasses the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of various health conditions, while adhering to established practice guidelines. Responsibilities include managing diagnostic screenings, prescribing medications, and educating patients on health improvement strategies. The APRN will also oversee healthcare team members in both on-site and off-site clinical environments, and provide mentorship to graduate students and resident physicians. Participation in research initiatives is also expected.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
• Conduct comprehensive physical examinations, gather and document patient data, manage labor processes, and perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
• Evaluate patients for admission and provide care for low-risk women in labor at or beyond 37 weeks of gestation.
• Document initial prenatal histories and physical assessments for patients in emergency and labor settings.
• Deliver routine prenatal and intrapartum care, ensuring proper documentation of orders throughout the care continuum.
• Offer outpatient services focused on prenatal, gynecologic, and women's health for low-risk patients.
• Assess and manage complex cases in specialized clinics, collaborating with OB/GYN for comprehensive care plans.
• Administer initial evaluations for infants and initiate emergency interventions as necessary. Interpret diagnostic results and prescribe appropriate medications, including controlled substances.
• Collaborate effectively with the obstetric care team.
• Provide continuous in-house coverage for midwifery services, including on-call responsibilities.
• Assist in patient scheduling for procedures, coordinating with various services and completing necessary documentation.
• Engage in additional related duties as the clinical practice evolves.
Professional Development
• Apply evidence-based knowledge and clinical expertise in decision-making processes. Engage in quality improvement initiatives within the practice setting.
• Pursue ongoing education and independent learning to enhance clinical and professional skills.
• Participate in research activities related to obstetrics, gynecology, and midwifery.
Educational Responsibilities
• Contribute to the education of nursing students, medical students, residents, and other healthcare professionals through supervision and mentorship.
• Involve in lectures, skills labs, and curriculum development, while assessing the performance of nursing students and residents.
• Engage in community outreach to educate patients and their families about health topics.
• Maintain a faculty appointment to uphold clinical privileges within the healthcare system.
• Undertake additional duties and special projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Nursing or Doctorate of Nursing Practice is mandatory. Graduation from an accredited APRN program is essential. Current licensure as a Professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois is required.
