Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Supervisory Physician to join our team at the Indian Health Service. As a Supervisory Physician, you will be responsible for providing high-quality medical care to patients and leading a team of healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administer various types of anesthetics to render patients insensitive to pain during operations and other procedures.
  • Review patient history and examine patients to determine the degree of surgical risk and ascertain the type of pre-anesthetic sedation to be ordered.
  • Position patients on the operating table in a manner prescribed by the procedure to be done and assemble the necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Select the anesthetic best adapted to the patient's condition and advise and consult with the surgeon regarding the patient's condition and the risks involved.
  • Check patients for post-anesthesia complications and order and administer indicated treatments.
  • Responsible for the supervision of provision, planning, development, organization, integration, administration, and evaluation of the Anesthesia Department.
  • Establish policy and procedure manuals for anesthesiology services and prepare all required reports.
  • Provide technical guidance and assistance to Nurse Anesthetists and other professional medical staff and be responsible for all clinically-related activities of the department.
Requirements
  • Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation.
  • Permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country.
  • 5 years of residency training in Anesthesiology or have equivalent Anesthesiology specialized experience and training that demonstrates the ability to provide independent patient care.
  • Board Certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 grade level.
  • Managerial Abilities: demonstrated in work experience or training, that they possess, or have potential to develop, the qualities of successful supervision.
  • Supervisory Competencies: proficiency or the potential to develop proficiency in these competencies: Accountability, Customer Service, Decisiveness, Flexibility, Integrity/Honesty, Oral Communication, Problem Solving, and Written Communication.

This is a managerial position and candidates must have demonstrated in their work experience or training, that they possess, or have potential to develop, the qualities of successful supervision.
