Overview

The Oregon National Primate Research Center is situated on a sprawling 162-acre campus, dedicated to enhancing human health through innovative nonhuman primate research. Our facilities include a mix of forested areas, research buildings, and both indoor and outdoor animal housing, all designed to support our mission of advancing medical knowledge and treatment options for various diseases.

Role and Responsibilities

The Laboratory Animal Technician 1 plays a crucial role in ensuring the well-being and care of laboratory animals at our center. This position focuses on acquiring the skills necessary to perform essential tasks related to animal husbandry and research support. Responsibilities will vary based on the specific animal populations and their care needs, as well as the operational requirements of the facility. The Animal Resources & Research Support (ARRS) department is responsible for the daily care of approximately 5,300 nonhuman primates and 1,500 small laboratory animals across multiple buildings and outdoor enclosures.

Key Duties and Expectations

1. Under appropriate supervision, carry out routine animal husbandry tasks, which include:

  • Regular feeding and watering of animals
  • Safe capture, restraint, and transportation of animals for veterinary or research procedures
  • Routine cleaning and sanitization of animal housing and associated facilities
  • Assisting with health management tasks, including treatments and diagnostic procedures
  • Supporting facility maintenance and operations
  • Assisting with the handling and storage of animal feed
  • Participating in group animal handling and processing
  • Providing care for nursery animals
  • Engaging in enrichment activities for animals, including during weekends or overtime as needed
  • Managing inventory and supply requests
  • Handling and identifying various laboratory animal species

2. Monitor animal health and behavior, documenting any abnormalities and reporting findings.

3. Identify and report facility issues, performing basic maintenance tasks as required.

4. Operate necessary equipment to support animal care, including cage washers and veterinary instruments.

5. Collaborate with research staff to fulfill their needs in a professional manner.

6. Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned to support departmental goals.

Required Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic understanding of animal care, demonstrated through experience with pets or livestock
  • Ability to read, write, and follow both oral and written instructions
  • Effective communication skills with technical and professional personnel
  • Capability to assist in research support as trained
  • Professional demeanor when interacting with investigative staff
  • Competence in performing general animal husbandry tasks

Certifications:

  • Valid Driver's License with the ability to operate university vehicles

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED, with on-the-job training for skill advancement

Experience:

  • Minimum of 6 months of relevant experience with animals, or
  • Certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT), or
  • 2 years of indirect experience in a laboratory animal setting

Working Conditions:

  • Tasks may involve navigating wet or slick surfaces and climbing stairs.
  • Work in areas that may not be climate-controlled.
  • Potential exposure to zoonotic agents and hazardous chemicals.
  • Regular schedule with possible weekend and holiday work.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift and carry weights up to 50 lbs.
  • Proficiency in moving through various animal housing environments.
  • Sufficient dexterity for performing animal handling and husbandry tasks.
