Job Overview

Position Summary
This role involves skilled mechanical tasks related to the upkeep and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered machinery. The incumbent will handle intricate repair assignments on various county vehicles, including cars, trucks, and highway maintenance apparatus. Responsibilities encompass diagnosing vehicle issues to ascertain whether repairs should be conducted internally. The work entails servicing engines, drive trains, bodies, and hydraulic components. Occasionally, the technician may oversee other personnel in executing designated projects.

Key Responsibilities

Primary Duties
- Perform tuning and comprehensive overhauls on gasoline and diesel engines across a range of vehicles and maintenance equipment.
- Execute repairs and replacements of clutches, brakes, pumps, transmissions, and other essential components.
- Conduct tire repairs and replacements, including balancing and wheel alignment.
- Replace hydraulic and pneumatic hoses, cylinders, and related parts on maintenance machinery.
- Clean, wash, and lubricate vehicles as needed.
- Test and diagnose malfunctioning equipment to identify necessary repairs.
- Conduct road tests on completed repairs to ensure proper functionality.
- Provide guidance to operators and drivers regarding the correct use and routine maintenance of equipment.
- Maintain accurate vehicle maintenance records.
- Manage inventory and secure tools and supplies.
- Request necessary parts and supplies for repairs.
- Operate equipment as required.
- Assist in inspecting vehicles for compliance with state regulations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Essential Qualifications
- Proficient understanding of the methods, materials, tools, and procedures pertinent to the automotive mechanic profession.
- Familiarity with the principles of operation and construction of internal combustion engines.
- Awareness of safety hazards and precautions associated with the trade.
- Skilled in identifying and rectifying defects in motorized equipment.
- Competent in the use and maintenance of tools utilized in the repair of motorized equipment.
- Ability to comprehend and execute both oral and written instructions.
- Capable of instructing colleagues in mechanical processes.

Responsibilities may involve working in hazardous environments, including operating heavy machinery, navigating uneven surfaces, and performing tasks at various heights. The technician will be expected to conduct pre-operation safety checks on assigned equipment, ensuring all fluids, tires, lights, hoses, and gauges are in optimal condition. Physical demands include lifting and carrying items up to 50 pounds over distances of at least 20 yards, as well as utilizing hand and power tools.

Work conditions may vary, requiring adaptability to extreme weather, exposure to potential hazards, and the use of protective gear such as hard hats, safety shoes, gloves, and eyewear.



Minimum Qualifications

Experience and Training
- A minimum of three years in the automotive mechanic field or completion of a relevant repair course or apprenticeship.
- An equivalent combination of experience and training may also be considered.
- Possession of a valid Pennsylvania Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with air brake restriction removed. Additional endorsements may be required for certain equipment.

Compliance with the Federal Drug and Alcohol Testing program is mandatory.
