POSITION OVERVIEW
The Manufacturing Process Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting production operations by bridging the gap between design engineering and technical activities on the shop floor. This position is responsible for leading the development and enhancement of manufacturing processes for both new and existing products within the organization. Candidates should be adept at working in a CAD and ERP environment while also engaging in hands-on activities in testing or production settings. The Manufacturing Process Specialist is expected to work autonomously on various tasks and frequently collaborate with Design Engineers, Area Managers, and Supervisors.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop, assess, and refine manufacturing processes during the new product development phase and facilitate the transition to production.
- Work alongside Quality Engineering to ensure processes are thorough and precise during new product development, and collaborate with Continuous Improvement teams to enhance processes during production.
- Establish best practices based on current manufacturing capabilities and strive to elevate the company's operational capabilities.
- Oversee the execution of prototype processes and evaluate process capabilities.
- Assist in the setup of manual and CNC machinery, including tooling, gauging, and inspection.
- Create work instructions and process plans for a diverse array of manufactured components.
- Coordinate with suppliers to guarantee the availability of consumables for production.
- Provide support on the shop floor by addressing inquiries and requests.
- Enhance workflow within the shop through Continuous Improvement initiatives, including Kaizen events and lean activities.
- Utilize data to predict process takt time and balance operational capacities.
- Initiate product engineering concern reports and change requests backed by relevant data.
- Act as the liaison for Product Engineering to ensure manufacturability considerations are met.
- Conduct root cause analysis, develop interim containment strategies, and implement permanent corrective actions for non-conforming products.
- This role may involve limited travel, estimated at less than 10%.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY ROLE
This position does not entail supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS
To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to fulfill each essential duty effectively. The following qualifications are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required:
- Proficient in CAD software, preferably SolidWorks.
- Familiarity with time studies.
- Skilled in MS Office Suite.
- Capable of identifying and resolving manufacturing issues proactively.
- Able to collaborate with other Manufacturing Engineering Team members, Operations, Design Engineers, Quality Engineers, and production staff to meet both internal and external requirements.
- Competent in guiding machine shop personnel in best practices.
- Experience in setting up manual and CNC lathes and mills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A journeyman's card in machine trades or equivalent is required, along with a minimum of five years of relevant experience preferred. A solid understanding of engineering principles is essential.
LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY
Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary. Candidates must be able to read and interpret mechanical drawings, symbols, and electrical diagrams.
REASONING ABILITY
Must possess the ability to solve practical problems and address a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. This role requires interpreting various instructions provided in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule formats. Candidates should be adept at reviewing historical data and applying it to new scenarios, demonstrating strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks under deadlines.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Key physical functions include: frequent sitting and working at a desk; operating a computer; communicating via phone; navigating stairs; walking the shop floor; standing, stooping, bending, reaching, crawling, and occasionally lifting up to 50 lbs; and standing while attending to shop machinery.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment is a pleasant, temperature-controlled professional office within a manufacturing setting. The employee will have frequent interactions with the shop floor, which may involve exposure to moving mechanical parts and airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is variable, and air temperature may fluctuate with seasonal changes.
