Position Summary:


Under the guidance of a licensed nurse, the Patient Support Specialist is responsible for a range of duties aimed at enhancing patient care and comfort. This role involves delivering age-appropriate care, documenting observations, and contributing to the smooth operation of the healthcare unit. All responsibilities are executed in alignment with established policies, procedures, and standards.

Qualifications:

Education:
A high school diploma or GED is preferred.

One of the following is required:
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA);

Enrollment in a nursing program with at least one semester of clinical experience completed; or

A minimum of two years of relevant experience in a nursing assistant capacity.

Licensure/Certification:
CPR certification is mandatory, or it must be obtained during the onboarding process for nursing staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administers and records nursing care interventions to address the physical needs of patients as directed by the supervising nurse.
Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:

Providing hygiene and comfort services while ensuring patient privacy.
Assisting patients with bathing, oral hygiene, grooming, and other personal care needs.

Ensuring linens are clean, dry, and that patients are comfortable.

Facilitating hand hygiene before and after meals and toileting.

Patient Mobility:
Assists patients with mobility activities such as walking, sitting, and repositioning, utilizing proper techniques and equipment.

Nutrition Support:
Delivers and retrieves food trays and snacks, documenting dietary intake.

Assists patients with eating as needed and reports any concerns regarding intake.

Clears IV and tube feeding equipment at the end of each shift and documents appropriately.

Elimination Assistance:
Provides bedpans and urinals, and performs perineal care.

Conducts bladder catheter care and removes catheters as instructed.

Performs ostomy care, including the application of necessary appliances.

Records output and reports any abnormalities.

Additional Responsibilities:
Assists with post-mortem care and supports the admission, transfer, and discharge processes for patients.

Responds promptly to patient requests and call lights, typically within ten minutes.

  • Conducts monitoring procedures and reports patient responses.
Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:

Measuring vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, and pulse).

Weighing patients and reporting any significant changes.

Emptying drainage devices and performing blood glucose checks.

Observing and reporting any unusual conditions or changes in patient behavior.

  • Implements therapeutic measures and observes for changes.
Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:

Applying heat or cold treatments as directed.

Administering therapeutic baths and obtaining routine non-sterile specimens.

Assisting with patient preparations for various procedures.

Setting up and maintaining oxygen therapy as instructed.

Documenting all interventions and patient responses accurately.

  • Ensures the safety and security of patients, families, and staff.
Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:

Conducting regular rounds to check on patient needs.

Following standard safety protocols and maintaining a clean environment.

Reporting any equipment issues and keeping patient areas organized.

Interacting with patients and families in a respectful and courteous manner.

Explaining procedures clearly to patients and ensuring their privacy and rights are upheld.

  • Contributes to the efficient operation of the healthcare unit.
Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:

Utilizing computer systems for communication and information retrieval.

Assisting with inventory management and adhering to established guidelines.

Participating in cost-reduction efforts and maintaining cleanliness in the unit.

Collaborating with all members of the healthcare team and supporting changes positively.

  • Performs additional unit-specific tasks as required.
