Position Overview


The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is responsible for the strategic planning, coordination, and oversight of patient care for designated individuals, adhering to the principles of Centra Health's Professional Practice Framework.

The CNS serves as a pivotal figure in collaborating with the interdisciplinary team, laying the groundwork for the development of a comprehensive care plan.

Throughout the patient's journey, the CNS orchestrates the various care activities essential for achieving optimal health outcomes, while delegating tasks as necessary.

The CNS is committed to fostering a culture that embodies Centra Health's standards for excellence in quality and service, ensuring a safe environment for patients, and contributing to a positive workplace atmosphere.

The practice of the CNS aligns with the American Nurses Association's (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses, the Nurse Practice Act of Virginia, and the ANA Principles of Nurse Staffing.

Meets the applicable criteria of the Centra Nurse Engagement Program for a CNEP III.

Key Responsibilities

Operates under the principles of Centra Health's Professional Practice Framework

Plans, coordinates, oversees, and documents the care delivered to assigned patients

Delegates responsibilities to care providers in accordance with the ANA Principles of Nurse Staffing

Demonstrates critical thinking through effective clinical decision-making and prioritization

Leads, communicates, and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to formulate patient care strategies

Establishes and maintains an environment that safeguards patients from harm

Complies with National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG)

Engages in initiatives driven by nurse-sensitive quality indicators and/or unit-specific quality metrics

Ensures comprehensive patient and/or caregiver education utilizing relevant resources

Promotes and sustains a culture reflective of Centra Health's best practices

Implements changes based on evidence-based practices or research findings

Operationalizes unit-specific action plans to meet or exceed service excellence standards

Participates in service recovery and utilizes appropriate resources during complex situations

Addresses conflict resolution in a timely and consistent manner

Identifies personal contributions to unit-based performance goals

Safely and efficiently admits, transfers, and/or discharges patients

Utilizes resources (e.g., time, personnel, supplies, etc.) in a cost-effective manner

Engages in ongoing professional development as evidenced by self-assessment and attainment of degrees, certifications, and continuing education

Contributes to creating a supportive environment conducive to learning for all students from various academic programs

Other responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

Required Education:
Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program

Required Experience:
One (1) year of external nursing experience or completion of Nurse Residency Program (NRP) for new nurses with less than six (6) months of experience

Required Certifications and Licensures:
Hold a current, active license as a registered nurse in Virginia or possess a current multistate licensure privilege as a registered nurse.
