Genetics Research Staff Associate

Atlanta, Georgia, United States Spelman College Full time

Position Overview:
Spelman College is looking for a dedicated and skilled Staff Associate I to contribute to our research initiatives in the field of genetics and development.

Key Responsibilities:
The selected candidate will be responsible for independently managing the procurement of laboratory supplies, preparing essential buffers and media, and overseeing the maintenance of the laboratory's Drosophila collection. Collaboration with fellow team members will be essential to support various ongoing research projects.

This role also includes the training of new students and incoming lab members, fostering a collaborative environment.

Research Focus:
Our research group is engaged in investigating the genetic sequences and molecular mechanisms that govern gene expression during developmental processes. We explore how regulatory elements, often dispersed across extensive genomic regions, interact within the 3D organization of the genome to facilitate precise regulatory interactions.

Additionally, we study the transcription of these regulatory elements, which produce non-coding RNAs that can influence gene expression.

Methodological Approach:
Our research employs a multidisciplinary strategy that integrates cutting-edge genome engineering, functional genomics, and single-cell live imaging techniques to visualize transcriptional events in living embryos.

Qualifications:
Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field, along with a minimum of four years of experience in a biomedical research environment. A solid theoretical foundation in molecular biology and genetics is essential.

Skills Required:
The ideal candidate will demonstrate proficiency in laboratory techniques related to molecular biology, exhibit strong organizational capabilities, and possess an eagerness to learn new methodologies. Excellent communication skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are crucial.

Additional Requirements:
A commitment of two or more years is preferred. Candidates should have a robust understanding of molecular biology and genetics, along with experience in molecular cloning techniques such as PCR, restriction digests, agarose gel electrophoresis, and bacterial transformation. Familiarity with Drosophila husbandry and genetics is advantageous but not mandatory.

Successful candidates will be detail-oriented, capable of multitasking, and able to complete tasks efficiently. An interest in engaging socially with colleagues and a strong sense of teamwork are also valued.

Compensation:
The salary for this position will be determined based on various factors, including departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, and relevant training.
