The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled Vehicle and Equipment Repair Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our maintenance team, you will be responsible for diagnosing and repairing complex automotive and equipment issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair automotive vehicles and equipment, including engines, transmissions, and electrical systems
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as oil changes and tire rotations
  • Assist in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment, such as mowing tractors and boom lifts
  • Supervise and train junior technicians in the shop
  • Manage the flow of equipment in and out of the shop, ensuring timely completion of repairs
  • Enter daily work reports into the Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS)
  • Collaborate with Fleet Management to ensure timely repair of vehicles
  • Communicate with vendors to ensure timely completion of repairs

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of work experience in a related field, or an approved acceptable equivalence
  • Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly related experience
  • A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required upon entry to the position
  • Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position

Working Conditions

  • Work in a large garage setting, exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis
  • May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies
