Vehicle and Equipment Repair Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled Vehicle and Equipment Repair Technician III Assistant Shop Foreman to join our team at the South Carolina Department of Transportation. As a key member of our maintenance team, you will be responsible for diagnosing and repairing complex automotive and heavy equipment issues, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our fleet.
Key Responsibilities- Diagnose and repair complex automotive and heavy equipment issues, including engine, transmission, and brake systems.
- Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as oil changes, tire rotations, and brake pad replacements.
- Assist in the supervision of other mechanics and trainees, providing guidance and support as needed.
- Collaborate with the shop foreman to ensure the efficient operation of the shop and the timely completion of repairs.
- Enter daily work reports into the Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS) accurately.
- Repair and upgrade vehicles and equipment by welding parts or making new parts as needed.
- Make service calls on the road and diagnose problems at the scene, making necessary repairs.
- Work with Fleet Management to ensure timely repair of vehicles and equipment.
- Communicate with vendors to ensure timely repair of vehicles and equipment.
- Two (2) years of work experience in a related field, or an approved acceptable equivalence.
- Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly related experience.
- A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required upon entry to the position.
- Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
This position requires working in a large garage setting and may perform duties in an uncomfortable position for long periods of time. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
