About the Position

In this role, you will serve as a key member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers team at The Dalles Project, a hydroelectric facility on the Columbia River. Your primary responsibilities will include the operation, repair, and maintenance of grounds, facilities, and equipment associated with recreation sites, wildlife habitat lands, and water control structures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Construct wooden forms for concrete and perform finish carpentry tasks as needed.
  • Replace window glass and screening, and perform a wide range of welds from simple to precision welding.
  • Install and/or make plumbing maintenance repairs to toilets, sinks, drinking fountains, hydrants, valves, faucets, waterlines, water heaters, irrigation controllers, sprinkler heads, sewer lines, fixtures, pumps, and other equipment.
  • Perform grounds maintenance, including structural building and road repair, and operate flat bed trucks, forklifts, or other vehicles to move supplies, equipment, or material.
  • Make electrical repairs by removing, replacing, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, controls, and equipment.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you must have the ability to perform the majority of the following maintenance mechanic tasks under normal supervision:

  • Painting, carpentry, repairing irrigation systems, plumbing repairs, and welding.
  • Operating all associated tools and equipment related to sub-journeyman level skills.
  • Operating and maintaining forklifts, backhoes, and tractor-trailers.
  • Performing daily operation checks of equipment.

You must also have the ability to interpret instructions, specifications, and blueprints, and use and maintain tools and equipment. Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, and technical practices is also required.

Working Conditions

The majority of work is performed outside with exposure to a variety of weather and temperature extremes. Some tasks may be performed inside. You will be subject to cuts and bruises common to users of hand and power tools, and may be exposed to traffic hazards while driving on both improved and unimproved road surfaces.
