Project Engineer Job Description

Sargent Electric Company, a leading electrical contracting company, is seeking an experienced Project Engineer to join our team based in Pittsburgh, PA.

The primary function of this position is to provide technical oversight of engineering scopes for EPC or Design-Build projects with challenging schedule milestones.

This role involves working with customers to define and hone solutions for their projects, providing winning solutions for both our customers and Sargent Electric.

The Project Engineer will be responsible for troubleshooting electrical projects, providing commissioning support for the Owner, and working with multiple business units and project managers on assigned projects.

The position requires periodic travel to job sites nationwide and short-term on-site assignments.

Responsibilities:
  • Providing engineering solutions that support our customers' technology solutions and provide cost-effective, constructable designs.
  • Delivering designs that support safe delivery of our projects and safe solutions for our customers when energized.
  • Implementing and executing the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of our engineering activities and solutions in coordination with the Project Management and Field Management Team.
  • Ensuring that our subcontractors provide quality project teams and the appropriate, experienced talent to provide a safe, high-quality design.
  • Establishing project objectives and performance standards as defined by the Company's operating policies and procedures and the project turnover process.
  • Supporting the project proposal effort and supporting the estimating needs where required.
  • Assisting in defining engineering requirements, selecting engineering companies based on company qualifications and experience, resource availability, workload / backlog, project understanding, cost, and references.
  • Having a complete understanding of all plans, contract, and specification requirements to ensure the Company's interests are always protected, specific contractual obligations are adhered to, and all work is completed accordingly.
  • Participating in the development of all project schedules, budgets, and other project-related reports.
  • Supporting the procurement processes of EPC projects by working directly with our engineers and vendors to establish the most economical solutions and maintain schedules while urgently addressing all critical path items.
  • Maintaining a strong working relationship with the client, owner, engineer, vendors, suppliers, and other project-related firms and personnel to minimize conflicts and maximize the outcomes of all project activities.
Requirements:
  • A four-year electrical engineering degree or construction management degree or equivalent is preferred.
  • 5-8 years of related experience may be substituted.
  • EIT or PE preferred.
  • Ability to comprehend and provide input on single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, schematics, protection & control, fuse coordination, and outage planning, general arrangements, elevation drawings, bus designs/calculations, and below grade/raceway design.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of studies including but not limited to lightning, lighting, grounding, insulation coordination, short circuit, load flow, arc flash, protection coordination, and relay settings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of complex multi-discipline packages and coordinating multi-discipline packages – civil, foundations, structural steel, pre-engineered buildings, HVAC, mechanical and piping, insulation, electrical, instrumentation, telecommunications, life safety systems, and other specialty systems.
  • Experience in the energy projects including utility and power design ranging from low voltage to extra high voltage (LV, MV, HV, EHV), AC design, DC design, transmission/distribution/collection, renewable energy, solar, battery storage, wind, and natural gas projects is a strong plus.
