About Duke University Health System Clinical Laboratories

Our facilities are accredited by the College of American Pathologists and certified under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments. Our multidisciplinary team is devoted to addressing the unique and intricate testing requirements of Duke Health's diverse patient base by delivering prompt and precise results, educating future laboratorians, scientists, and physicians, and pioneering the diagnostics of tomorrow.
Schedule: Monday through Thursday, 8:30 PM to 7:00 AM. Generalist role covering all laboratory departments.
General Overview
Execute a range of routine and advanced technical tasks in laboratory testing to gather data essential for diagnosing and treating diseases. Responsibilities may vary based on the laboratory and can include a combination of the following duties:
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct various tests in clinical laboratories utilizing standard methodologies and equipment.
- Perform related laboratory tasks including specimen management, employing both manual and automated equipment for testing, and executing and documenting analytical tests.
- Operate both manual and computerized instruments.
- Calibrate and uphold instrumentation in accordance with established operating procedures.
- Process patient samples for testing, ensuring proper identification techniques and adherence to written protocols for quality assurance.
- Assist in troubleshooting assay issues as directed by senior personnel.
- Communicate any problems or concerns to the appropriate team members.
- Maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Engage in the development of new laboratory tests and methodologies.
- Contribute to the preparation for laboratory inspections.
- Review inspection documents and procedures to stay informed; report any compliance issues to senior staff.
- Participate in proficiency testing as required to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Document quality control and assurance outcomes.
- Notify senior personnel of any instrument malfunctions or unexpected results.
- Review written procedures for accuracy and suggest amendments to management.
- Understand and adhere to all necessary safety protocols.
- Maintain compliance with safety training requirements.
- Report all safety incidents promptly.
- Attend all laboratory meetings and required training sessions.
- Adhere to competency testing protocols for laboratory staff and participate in training programs.
- May provide technical guidance and mentorship to students, interns, residents, and staff.
- Perform additional related duties as needed, demonstrating behaviors that support the achievement of organizational goals and values.
- Consistently collaborate and communicate effectively with colleagues to ensure efficient workflow.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science; or Medical Technology is required. Minimum educational or experience criteria may be adjusted on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment director if minimal CLIA requirements are met by the employee for the tasks performed.
Experience
No prior experience is required.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
Certification is preferred.
