Job Summary

The Deputy Chief of Surgery is a physician responsible for direct support of oversight of the full scope of surgical services within the South Texas Veterans Health Care Services (STVHCS) to include inpatient (acute care and critical care), outpatient services and operative services. Surgical subspecialties include General Surgery, Otolaryngology, Orthopedics, Podiatry, Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery, Urology, Ophthalmology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and Gynecology.

Key Responsibilities

The Deputy Chief of Surgery is responsible to meet organizational access targets regarding surgical services, and timeliness measures within the operative services. The Deputy Chief of Surgery is responsible to provide direct supervision to the Surgery Section Chiefs and to ensure that clinical staff function within their privileges to meet organizational goals for quality, safety and productivity.

Requirements

Applicants must be a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Applicants must also have completed, or currently be completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Applicants must hold a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. Applicants must also be proficient in spoken and written English.

Preferred Qualifications

Applicants with leadership experience and excellent communication skills are preferred. Applicants with knowledge of written policies and procedures developed in compliance with all applicable accrediting organizations and program offices, standards and requirements are also preferred.

Working Conditions

The position requires light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking (2 hours), standing (2 hours), ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, specific visual requirement (20/40 DVA; Binoc), both eyes required, depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors, and hearing (aid permitted).
