The Police Chief is an at-will position appointed by the City Manager and operates under their general guidance. As a key member of the Executive Team, the Chief will strategize, lead, manage, and supervise the operations and activities of the Police Services Department. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic and seasoned law enforcement professional with a strong leadership presence and a proven history of successful policing initiatives. This individual will collaborate with essential stakeholders to realize an ambitious and vibrant vision for the Police Services Department. In this role, the Police Chief will work closely with the City Manager, elected officials, department heads, and the engaged community. The Chief will embody the principles of public service, dedicated to providing the highest quality law enforcement services.

Role Overview

The qualifications for this position include a combination of experience and training that would likely provide the necessary knowledge and skills. A typical pathway to acquire these qualifications includes: a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, with at least four years in senior management and administrative roles. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in criminal justice, business administration, police science, or a related field is required. Graduation from the FBI National Academy and/or a command college is preferred, as is a master's degree in a relevant discipline. Additionally, candidates must possess a valid California POST Management certificate and a Class C California Driver's License with a clean driving record.

Qualifications

Education requirements include a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with major coursework in criminal justice, business administration, police science, or a related field.

Essential Skills

Candidates should demonstrate strong leadership capabilities, a proven track record in law enforcement, and embody the values of integrity, professionalism, respect, and teamwork.

Preferred Skills

Graduation from the FBI National Academy, completion of a command college, and possession of a master's degree in a related field are desirable.

Compensation and Benefits

The City of Coronado offers a competitive compensation package. Salary is negotiable based on qualifications and experience, with the current salary range for the Police Chief being competitive, alongside an excellent benefits package including CalPERS retirement.
