Job Summary

AgeSpan Volunteer Opportunities seeks a dedicated and compassionate individual to serve as a Long Term Care Ombudsman. As a volunteer, you will play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life of nursing and rest home residents by advocating for their rights and interests.


Key Responsibilities
  • Advocate for residents in assigned facilities, ensuring their voices are heard and their concerns are addressed.
  • Assess, resolve, and provide information and referral for concerns of residents, families, and the community.
  • Complete regular visits to assigned facilities, maintaining open communication with facility staff and residents.
  • Identify and report issues affecting the health, safety, welfare, and resident rights, including reports of abuse, neglect, or mistreatment.
  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Notify the Program Director of any conflicts of interest or concerns that may arise during your service.

Requirements and Skills
  1. Complete a volunteer application process, including an interview with Volunteer Programs Staff and Program Director.
  2. Complete a CORI check and General Agency Volunteer Orientation.
  3. Shadow a Program Director on a visit prior to attending certification training.
  4. Successfully complete certification training presented by the Massachusetts Office of the State Long Term Care Ombudsman.
  5. Attend scheduled monthly LTCOP Staff meetings and complete re-certification training every two years.
  6. Participate in Field Supervision with the Program Director or their Designee as required.
  7. Have reliable transportation or access to it and basic computer/technology skills.
  8. Exhibit excellent communication skills and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
