Position Summary
As a Battery/Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Engineer, you will be integral to the Low Carbon Energy (LCE) Risk Management team at BakerRisk, spearheading projects focused on battery safety. Your role will involve supporting existing battery-related services while identifying and developing new areas of expertise in line with emerging battery technologies and safety challenges. This position will also allow you to collaborate with the testing team on large-scale battery evaluations.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct Hazard Mitigation Analysis (HMA) and Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) for BESS in compliance with NFPA 855.
- Execute Fire Hazard Analysis (FHA) and establish fire protection design criteria for BESS and electric vehicle battery manufacturing sites.
- Formulate fire protection strategies for utility-scale BESS initiatives.
- Utilize Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools for fire modeling and smoke analysis in battery applications.
- Assist clients with the permitting process and inspections for BESS by working closely with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).
- Support the BakerRisk Testing team in planning, executing, and collecting data for large-scale battery fire tests in accordance with UL 9540A and other relevant standards.
- Analyze data from battery tests, communicate findings to the team, and propose innovative approaches for future testing.
- Build relationships with new battery clients, participate in industry conferences, and contribute to business development efforts.
- Provide training to team members on battery-related subjects.
- Bachelor's degree (required) or Master's degree (preferred) in an engineering discipline such as fire protection, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, materials engineering, or mechanical engineering.
- A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in the battery sector.
- Solid understanding of battery fundamentals and familiarity with battery testing equipment and protocols.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication abilities.
- Meticulous attention to detail, documentation, and adherence to standard operating procedures.
- Experience with abuse testing at various levels (cell/module/pack) and knowledge of safety testing standards including UN 38.3, SAE 2464, and RTCA DO-311.
- Experience in code compliance evaluations related to battery safety in accordance with standards such as UL 9540/9540A, EN 15276, and DIN 14675.
- Progress towards or possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license or other relevant certifications.
- Engagement in professional and technical organizations.
- Publication of research papers and articles.
