Lead Research Associate
Position Overview:
The Lead Research Associate will engage in both independent and collaborative research efforts within the realms of molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, and developmental biology in a Drosophila laboratory setting. This role entails the preparation of laboratory equipment and materials to ensure the successful execution of experiments.
The successful candidate will be tasked with the collection, documentation, and analysis of experimental data, as well as contributing to the drafting of grant proposals and scientific manuscripts in partnership with senior research personnel and the Principal Investigator. Additionally, this position will provide support to the laboratory manager, undergraduate and doctoral students, research associates, and fellow research assistants.
The research conducted in the Helfand Laboratory is centered on elucidating the molecular, cellular, and genetic mechanisms that govern aging and lifespan determination, utilizing the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, as a model organism. We employ a diverse array of methodologies, including molecular, genetic, cellular, neurobiological, pharmacological, immunological, and behavioral techniques, to investigate the aging process and the factors influencing lifespan. By integrating advanced molecular genetic techniques with insights into the physiology, anatomy, behavior, and lifespan-altering interventions of Drosophila, we have established a unique model for exploring the genetic components of aging.
This is a fixed-term position, subject to extension based on available funding.

- Proficiency in laboratory techniques related to Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, and Biochemistry. Candidates should be adept in fundamental molecular biology methods, including PCR, electrophoresis, and western blotting, as well as in the cultivation and maintenance of cell cultures.
- Preferred: Experience with Drosophila melanogaster, RNA/DNA purification and analysis, sequencing, biochemistry, or cellular imaging.
Key Competencies:
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to supervise and mentor others.
- Capability to design, conduct, and assess experiments independently.
