Health Information Coder II Specialist

Job Summary:
The County of San Bernardino, CA is seeking a highly skilled Health Information Coder II to join our team. As a Health Information Coder II, you will be responsible for abstracting and coding outpatient charts in hospital and clinic settings, utilizing International Coding of Diseases (ICD-10-CM), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) Level II coding classifications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review charts (in paper or electronic format) and identify procedures
- Abstract and code patient charts, utilizing ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding classifications
- Evaluate charts for completeness and accuracy in conformance with current-relevant standards and regulations
- Contact clinic/hospital staff to complete charts, make corrections, and/or clarify information for coding purposes
- Attend meetings and work collaboratively with multiple Department divisions, including Information Technology, Quality Management, Medical Services, etc.
- Facilitate direct service provider trainings and develop educational material, such as FAQs
- Provide coding expertise and support during pre-planned audits, and in group or one-on-one settings
Requirements:
- Possess and maintain one of the following credentials: Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
- Two (2) years of full-time equivalent experience within the past five (5) years, coding outpatient and inpatient stays/visits at an acute care hospital, ambulatory care clinic, or medical office settings utilizing ICD-9-CM or ICD-10-CM and CPT coding classifications
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience utilizing an automated encoder or abstracting system
- Medi-Cal and Medicare billing expertise and knowledge, especially in the field of behavioral health
- Fluency in American Sign Language, Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish, Tagalog, and/or Vietnamese
Working Conditions:
Travel throughout the County may be required. Employees will be required to make provision for transportation (mileage reimbursement is available at current IRS rates). A valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced and maintained for the individual providing the transportation.
