Emergency Communications Specialist

Position Summary:
Responsible for handling 9-1-1 emergency and non-emergency calls from the community; gathers essential information and inputs data into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system; directs callers to the appropriate services and coordinates assistance as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintains and updates call records, and reports necessary changes to the Shift Supervisor, ensuring all logs and documents are accurately filed.
- Supports trained Communications Officers in relaying orders and receiving messages from various emergency response units, including law enforcement, fire services, and medical teams.
- Engages with the public over the phone to collect accurate and relevant information.
- Identifies duplicate calls and screens communications from high-risk areas.
- Stays informed about emergency alert protocols and disaster response procedures.
- Trained to make timely notifications regarding calls.
- Completes GCIC/NCIC training and certification within the initial employment period.
- Observes and learns the operation of GCIC/NCIC, entering data on stolen vehicles and missing persons.
- Acquires knowledge of major routes, access points, and ongoing construction within the area.
- Successfully completes Basic Communications Officer Training within the first six months of employment.
- Participates in training sessions as required.
- Regular attendance is essential.
- Performs additional related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
- Must be a U.S. citizen or a naturalized citizen.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. is required.
- Background checks are mandatory for certification.
- Typing speed of at least 32 words per minute with 80% accuracy.
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience that meets the minimum qualifications.
Certifications Required:
- GCIC/NCIC Certification must be obtained within the first thirty days of employment.
- Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) Certification is required within the first two months of hire.
- CPR certification must be secured within the first two months of employment.
- P.O.S.T. Basic Communications Officer Certification is necessary within six months of hire.
Skills and Abilities:
- Familiarity with the geography of Hall County and surrounding areas.
- Ability to read and interpret maps.
- Clear and effective verbal communication skills.
- Capacity to make quick, accurate decisions during emergencies.
- Proficient in typing and using computer systems.
- Adept at retaining and utilizing codes and signals in emergency communications.
- Ability to interact courteously with the public and other professionals.
- Strong interpersonal skills to maintain effective relationships with various agencies and the community.
Physical and Sensory Requirements:
This role requires the ability to remain stationary for extended periods, operate office equipment, and manage stress effectively. Candidates must be able to communicate clearly and possess good hand-eye coordination.

This position may involve working collaboratively or independently, depending on the situation.
