Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Veterinary Technician to join our team at Stony Brook University. As a key member of our Division of Laboratory Animal Resources, you will play a critical role in providing exceptional veterinary care to our laboratory animal population.

Responsibilities
  • Provide routine veterinary health care under the guidance of a veterinarian, including medical rounds, animal observation, and treatment administration.
  • Collect diagnostic samples, send them to the diagnostic laboratory, and maintain all pertinent records.
  • Assist in the conduct of large animal receiving and animal conditioning and maintenance programs, including recordkeeping.
  • Order drugs and supplies, maintain drug inventory, and complete orders for signature.
  • Monitor areas for outdated drugs and dispose of any that are outdated.
  • Assist in the diagnostic laboratory, including performing diagnostic tests and recording results, maintaining inventory control, and ordering supplies.
  • Euthanize animals per protocol, as assigned, and send out samples for histopathology as directed.
  • Assist veterinarians and investigators in surgery, schedule procedures, and maintain anesthesia and surgery records.
  • Provide post-operative monitoring and care, maintain surgical suites, and autoclave instruments and supplies.
  • Assist in radiology, perform and/or assist in diagnostic procedures, process films, and maintain logbooks of procedures.
  • Assist in special procedures by investigators, maintain cost accounting records, and generate investigator recharge bills.
  • Train DLAR and investigator staff members in animal-related procedures and perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Science or a related field, or a combination of education and full-time work experience in veterinary services totaling four years.
  • One year of full-time experience in veterinary science, including experience in laboratory animal medicine or clinical veterinary medicine.
  • Experience with common laboratory animal species, licensed veterinary technician, and AALAS certification.
Working Conditions

This is a full-time appointment, and the position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly. Evening and weekend work may be required at times.

This position has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed.
