Position Title: Assistant Professor in Bioinformatics and Computational Genomics

Position Overview: The Department of Genetics is inviting applications for an academic faculty role at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor focused on research. The ideal candidate will:

  1. Lead the Bioinformatics Core, offering essential bioinformatics support to faculty across the institution and its partners.
  2. Engage in innovative research related to the development and application of bioinformatics and computational genomics methodologies, including Machine Learning and AI, to analyze and integrate diverse omics data.
  3. Instruct and guide both undergraduate and graduate students in bioinformatics, computational genomics, and related emerging technologies.

This role requires collaboration in a dynamic environment, contributing to Bioinformatics and Data Science (BIDS) collaborative research initiatives, as well as participating in departmental and university committees. A strong commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and student engagement is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Establish a comprehensive bioinformatics and computational genomics research program to enhance the research objectives of the School of Medicine.
  2. Oversee the development and management of the Bioinformatics Core service operations.
  3. Create and implement multi-omics data analysis and integration frameworks.
  4. Contribute to Machine Learning and AI advancements applicable to biomedical research and education.
  5. Expand the LSU Health Genomics Data HUB to facilitate collaborative research efforts.
  6. Maintain the scientific computing infrastructure, including both hardware and software components.
  7. Teach courses in bioinformatics and programming languages such as R and Python, while mentoring students.
  8. Support the Cancer Centers Cancer Bioinformatics Program in achieving NCI designation.
  9. Develop and sustain a research program funded through external grants.
  10. Provide training on bioinformatics tools through workshops and seminars.
  11. Engage in additional activities that align with the research, education, and service missions of BIDS.

Qualifications:

Required Education: PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Genomics, Computer Science, or a closely related quantitative field.

Experience: A minimum of 2 years of postdoctoral experience with a proven publication record in bioinformatics or computational genomics is required.

Preferred Qualifications: 4-5 years of postdoctoral experience with a strong publication record in the relevant fields.
