Position Overview

Mayo Clinic Health System in Wisconsin is seeking a dedicated physician to join the Department of Palliative Medicine and Hospice in La Crosse, WI. The primary focus of this role will be on Hospice care, alongside providing rotating coverage for the Palliative Care Hospital Consultation Service, with the potential for some involvement in outpatient clinic settings.

The responsibilities for Palliative Care within the hospital and clinic are centered in the La Crosse area, while the Hospice service area encompasses a broader region, managing an average daily census of approximately 150 patients.

The selected physician will be the sixth member of a department that spans two regions in western Wisconsin, with teaching responsibilities integral to the position, including an academic appointment with the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.

Key Responsibilities

1. Provide rotating coverage as the Hospice Medical Director, with the opportunity to take on the primary role.
2. Engage in the inpatient Palliative Care Consultation Service.
3. Collaborate with primary services, other consultants, and the interdisciplinary team to enhance the patient's care plan.
4. Assist in clarifying patient and family care objectives.
5. Deliver expert assessment and management of both physical and non-physical symptoms.
6. Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings.
7. Ensure proper documentation of patient care services to facilitate professional billing.
8. Engage in the interdisciplinary ambulatory Palliative Care clinic.
9. Supervise nurse practitioners and physician assistants within the Palliative Care Service.

10. Collaborate with departmental physicians for shared call schedules related to hospice and palliative care coverage.

11. Participate in Quality Improvement initiatives.

12. Provide educational opportunities in Palliative Care for staff, colleagues, students, and the community as appropriate.

13. Uphold confidentiality regarding patients, families, staff, and the organization.

14. Remain adaptable to perform additional duties as required.

Professional and Ethical Standards

Commitment to a covenantal physician-patient relationship and holistic care is essential. Participation in physician-assisted suicide or euthanasia is not permitted.Qualifications

Candidates must be board-certified or board-eligible in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Fellowship training in this specialty is preferred, although exceptions may be made for candidates with significant experience and demonstrated skills. Candidates must possess DEA registration or obtain it upon hire, and must hold current medical licenses for practice in the relevant states or obtain them upon hire.Benefits
