The role of Process Engineer – Powder is pivotal in the establishment of a cutting-edge facility focused on metal, alloy, and magnet production. This position offers a unique chance to play a key role in the creation of a new advanced manufacturing site, shaping the future landscape of American industry. The ideal candidate will possess practical experience in managing metal powder production processes, including powder transport, milling, classification, blending, and quality assurance methodologies.

The Process Engineer will collaborate closely with the Production Engineering team, ensuring effective integration of powder production with both upstream and downstream operations. Upstream activities will encompass electrowinning, alloying, and strip casting, while downstream functions will involve pressing, sintering, and machining. It is essential for the Process Engineer to engage with a diverse array of technical experts to develop a comprehensive understanding of the physical processes, critical control metrics, and potential risks across all manufacturing stages.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical guidance and support to optimize powder processing operations, ensuring compliance with internal and customer standards.
  • Collaborate with production teams across upstream and downstream processes to facilitate smooth operational integration.
  • Deliver technical training and assistance to production personnel.
  • Engage with procurement, vendors, maintenance, and operators on equipment specifications, design evaluations, and new plant commissioning.
  • Contribute to environmental, health, and safety (EHS) risk assessments, HAZOP studies, and regulatory compliance initiatives.
  • Plan and implement process and procedure enhancements for hydrogen decrepitation (HD) furnaces, jet milling, and other powder processing techniques.
  • Work alongside the R&D team to innovate and expedite the implementation of new technologies at an industrial scale.
  • Assess customer requirements and collaborate with manufacturing and engineering teams to establish process control plans that meet specifications.
  • Monitor and adjust key operating parameters to achieve optimal yield, consistent product quality, and minimal EHS impacts.
  • Oversee daily quality control procedures, driving initiatives to maintain stable and efficient powder processing operations.
  • Lead investigations and resolutions of quality issues related to powder production.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy/Materials Science, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related technical discipline.
  • 3-5 years of experience in industrial-scale metal powder processing.
  • In-depth knowledge of powder metallurgy processes and quality control fundamentals.
  • Experience in process control data collection and analysis.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including familiarity with FMEA, 8D, A3, and Root Cause Analysis.
  • Proficient in equipment fault diagnosis, process development, and understanding of PLCs and P&ID.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Attributes:

  • 5+ years of experience in industrial powder manufacturing and processing.
  • Extensive technical knowledge of metal powder production methods.
  • Practical experience in the safe handling of metal powders.
  • Familiarity with SAP software.
  • Ability to identify and implement effective solutions while gaining buy-in from diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience with programming and process control tools, including P&ID, PLC, CFD, MATLAB, Python, Mini-Tab, and AutoCAD/Solidworks.
