Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Equipment Operator to join our team at the Commonwealth of Virginia. As an Equipment Operator, you will be responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment and performing manual labor tasks to maintain and repair our roadways.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, and tractors with attachments to perform tasks such as clearing drainage pipes and ditches, cutting brush, and pot-hole patching.
  • Participate as a working team member to complete road maintenance projects, including responding to emergency roadway and severe weather events.
  • Prepare and clean up work zones, and perform traffic control to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Perform pre-trip inspections and complete preventive maintenance on equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety.
  • Respond to accidents, emergency/disaster response, and other situations that require immediate attention.
Requirements
  • Ability to follow safety policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Knowledge of roadway and roadside related maintenance equipment, materials, and methods.
  • Demonstrated experience in operation of equipment comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Valid CDL and applicable endorsements.
  • Recent experience with heavy manual labor and heavy equipment operation.
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment performing emergency operations, including snow removal and storm response.
