The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics Department of Nursing is seeking a skilled Patient Care Technician to join our team in the Surgery Specialty Services Unit (2RC).

This unit is part of the Medical Surgical Services (MSS) Division and provides post-operative care for patients undergoing complex procedures.

The Surgical Specialty Unit is a 34-bed surgical unit that cares for patients with a variety of conditions, including solid organ transplant, trauma surgery, and colorectal surgery.

As a Patient Care Technician, you will assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses. Your responsibilities will include obtaining and recording vital signs, performing medical asepsis, and assisting with patient admission, transfers, and discharges.

You will also be responsible for providing for patients' personal hygiene and comfort, turning, positioning, and ambulating patients, and transporting patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.

Responsibilities:

  • Obtain and record vital signs
  • Perform medical asepsis
  • Assist with patient admission, transfers, and discharges
  • Provide for patients' personal hygiene and comfort
  • Turn, position, and ambulate patients
  • Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies
  • Assist with patient care conferences
  • Participate in nursing care conferences
  • Provide for patient comfort measures through social interactions
  • Share responsibility for preparation, proper use, and care of equipment and supplies
  • Clean areas per designated guidelines and standards
  • Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units

Requirements:

  • Ability to read, write, and follow instructions
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting preferred
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication skills
